WHY YOU SHOULD TRUST ME

My first computer was an MS-DOS laptop. I got it in about 2001 and I used to play Prince of Persia and Dave in black and white.

Because I don’t have the option, I was forced to fix and upgrade all my computers, both Windows and Mac.
In the early 2010s, I wrote about electronics and I always was helping people buy the best tech for their needs.

ASUS VivoBook 15 F515 REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

This laptop is able to open dozens of Google Chrome tabs and more without the fans sounding annoying.

  • DISPLAY:

The display of the ASUS VivoBook 15 F515 has a widescreen look and offers a little bezel.

Due to the odd viewing angles, to see the display without a sheen, you have to look at the laptop at about 100 degrees angle. In addition to the dim color profile, the display is underwhelming watching videos.

  • KEYBOARD:

The keyboard is comfortable to type on with ample clean white backlighting for easy use in dark rooms.

The keys have a good amount of travel without feeling too mushy.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad is just okay, a little bit small but it has a fingerprint reader for locking up your system.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The ASUS VivoBook 15 F515 can last 5 hours and 20 minutes browsing the internet over Wi-Fi, which is slightly below average for laptops in this price range.

  • PORTABILITY

The size and weight of this laptop make it able to go into a backpack without much notice.

  • WEBCAM

The VGA Webcam is disappointing, its quality is comparable to the ones released ten years ago.

  • OTHER

The ASUS VivoBook 15 F515 is capable of distributing heat to use on the lap. The fans are also not loud as other laptops like the Acer Aspire 5.

VERDICT

If you are seeking a laptop with plenty of ports, middling performance for nursing tasks, and decent battery life, you should consider this VivoBook 15.

Acer Aspire 5 Slim REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

Due to its CPU, RAM, and SSD, this laptop is able to easily handle daily tasks like watching Youtube emailing, documents, and nursing work.

  • DISPLAY:

The display is sharp enough for most people with its pixel density.

In very bright environments, this display isn’t bright enough and its matte screen is not able to overcome glare from direct reflections. But in the nighttime, it is comfortable and doesn’t strain your eyes.

  • KEYBOARD:

The keyboard of this laptop feels good to type on even in dark environments with its backlight. It has also a nice and crisp feeling and registers the presses without too much pressure.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad of the Acer Aspire 5 Slim is a bit on the smaller side, but still responsive.

Despite the plastic surface, using it still feels nice and it is smooth to perform gestures.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The Acer Aspire 5 Slim is able to run for 6 hours and 48 minutes on a single full charge, which is pretty impressive.

Unfortunately, this laptop needs three hours to be fully charged.

  • PORTABILITY

This thin and light laptop and compact charger fit into most bags, making it reasonably mobile for a laptop in its size.

  • WEBCAM

The webcam is okay, offering decent colors but a bit of noise and grainy details if the lighting isn’t right.

  • OTHERS

The Acer Aspire 5 Slim looks similar to Apple Macbooks and is pleasing to the eye.

To lock and unlock this laptop, you have a fingerprint scanner that is compatible with Windows Hello.

VERDICT

If you are a nurse and you are looking for an inexpensive laptop that feels well built, portable, and able to get you through a good part of a day of typical productivity tasks.

  • OLED display look better than competitors with IPS displays.

ASUS ZenBook 13 REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

In multitasking, the ASUS ZenBook 13 with the AMD chip is better than Intel’s ones but in intensive apps like gaming or video encoding, it’s not the case.

This laptop performance is more relevant for general use and productivity work like what nurses need.

  • DISPLAY:

The display of the ASUS ZenBook 13 offers nice deep blacks and saturated stunning colors that look better than IPS displays.

An OLED screen in a laptop in this price range is pretty rare.

In terms of brightness, this laptop is brighter than the Dell XPS 13 or the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360.

  • KEYBOARD:

Instead of being clicky, this keyboard is mushy but it becomes comfortable enough when you get used to it but the key layout is too cramped.

If you fully extend the screen, the keyboard lifts up toward a more ergonomic typing angle.

For users with large hands, the slightly rectangular shape keys could reduce your typing accuracy but they don’t produce any annoying noises while typing.

The backlight of this keyboard can be adjusted in three steps.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad on this laptop is smooth, accurate, wide, and easy to use but sometimes you get a bit of rattle with the click.

This touchpad that doubles as a Numpad responds to touch quickly and is good at palm rejection.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The ASUS ZenBook 13 can last an average of 13 hours 50 minutes.

Compared to other laptops, the ASUS ZenBook 13 outperformed the MacBook Air M1 by a couple of hours.

  • PORTABILITY

The small and lightweight body of the ASUS ZenBook 13 makes it good for everyday carry.

  • WEBCAM

The 720p HD webcam on this laptop is pretty standard. It has visual noise and it lacks sharpness and in decent light, it’s grainy and not great.

But you still get a Windows Hello facial authentication with the built-in IR sensor.

  • OTHER

The audio quality is average for a thin ultraportable.

This laptop lacks a headphone jack.

VERDICT

If you are looking for a seriously lightweight Ultrabook with excellent performance, then this laptop is a good choice to consider.

M1 MacBook Air REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

The MacBook Air (M1-2020) takes just 15 seconds to boot up.

Speaking of its performance, the MacBook Air (M1-2020) is lightning-quick.

One thing I didn’t like about this laptop is that under load, the fanless design could limit its performance to cool down the laptop.

  • DISPLAY:

Due to the high pixel density, the display of the MacBook Air (M1-2020) is very sharp.

Unfortunately, the display of this laptop still has thick bezels.

  • KEYBOARD:

The MacBook Air (M1-2020) comes with a new keyboard design that feels tactile and responsive and is less prone to sticking.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad on the MacBook Air (M1-2020) is massive and has smooth scrolling.

It also uses haptic feedback to simulate the clicks instead of having physical buttons.

The Force Touch support allows performing a secondary function or bringing up a contextual menu in some applications.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The MacBook Air (M1-2020) can last 11 hours and 15 minutes looping a 1080p video at 50% brightness, which is very impressive.

  • PORTABILITY

Considering how thin and light, this laptop is very portable by easily fitting into most bags with its small adapter.

  • WEBCAM

The webcam video quality is fine and doesn’t wow anyone.

Compared to the early-2020 Intel-based MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air (M1-2020) webcam offers better colors, including skin tones, and an overall brighter picture.

  • OTHER

Another thing to mention about this laptop is the headphone jack that we get back again. You also get the 2 Thunderbolt 3 USB 4 ports.

Speakers on this laptop can fill a pretty-large living room with a sweet sound.

VERDICT

If you can afford the MacBook Air (M1-2020), you will get a premium laptop that is thin, slim, and impressively powerful.

HP Envy x360 13 (2020) REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

This laptop is able to fly through everyday browsing and streaming or a fairly heavy load of nurse work that can open a dozen apps and Chrome tabs with occasional downloads.

Despite being slim and compact, the HP Envy x360 13 (2020) never got hot enough to cause alarm switching to the comfort fan mode.

  • DISPLAY:

Even at extreme angles, movies and images still look amazing letting you share your nurse work presentations without any washout of colors or polarizing effects.

What I like about this display are the incredibly thin bezels that allow it to fit a 13-inch screen in an 11-inch chassis.

If you need to write down notes related to your nursing job, you can use any Windows-based stylus pen.

  • KEYBOARD:

The keyboard on the HP Envy x360 13 (2020) is smooth, gives fast feedback, but feels very small.

Typing on this keyboard for extended periods feels tiring with the scissor switches’ short travel distance.

The key’s backlight can be adjusted on two levels.

  • TRACKPAD:

Despite its plastic, the trackpad of the HP Envy x360 13 (2020) is decent and feels high quality but in order to perform drag and drop, you have to keep a firm pressure at all times.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

One single full charge of this laptop can last 11 hours during normal office and home use.

Another thing that I liked about its battery performance is its ability to charge to 50% battery in just 30 minutes.

  • PORTABILITY

This laptop is easy to carry around with its 13.3-inch display how thin and light.

  • WEBCAM

The widescreen HD 720p webcam has poor video quality due to the images that are overexposed lack detail and look unnatural.

If your nurse job requires a better webcam, I recommend you the reasonably priced Acer Aspire 5 (2020).

VERDICT

If you are seeking a quiet laptop for both office and at home, with excellent video resolution and audio quality, and an excellent battery life that can get you through the workday and is fast to charge, then this HP Envy x360 13 (2020) is a great choice.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST LAPTOP FOR NURSING STUDENTS

DISPLAY

Since you will be looking at the screen for long periods, you should get an FHD display with at least a 13” screen to get enough space to get two windows next to each other simultaneously or read, type, or take notes without having to scroll down too much.

CPU

In your case as a nursing student, you don’t really have to worry about what CPU you get as long you are getting a recent laptop.

RAM

Since recent operating systems need a lot of memory, you should get a least 8GB of memory to still get something for your programs to load decently.

BATTERY

Since you will be always on the go, you should get a laptop with a battery life of at least eight hours and that is also fast at charging, like getting up to 50% in just 30 minutes.

STORAGE

In terms of storage space, 128 GB can be enough for your nursing school documents, videos, and images.

What you should pay attention to is that whatever storage capacity you get, it should be SSD to let your laptop be fast at booting up and launching programs.

WEIGHT

The best nursing student laptops should not exceed 3 lbs in order to stay easy to carry.

Do not forget to look at how compact the power adapter is because sometimes they’re bulky.
