WHY YOU SHOULD TRUST ME

My first computer was an MS-DOS laptop. I got it in about 2001 and I used to play Prince of Persia and Dave in black and white.

Because I don’t have the option, I was forced to fix and upgrade all my computers, both Windows and Mac.
In the early 2010s, I wrote about electronics and I always was helping people buy the best tech for their needs.

Dell XPS 15 OLED (2021) REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

This laptop is able to perform more demanding tasks like opening more than 20 browser tabs, and other programs at the same time.

What I also like about this laptop is that it stays snappy and cool even under pressure.

  • DISPLAY:

The gorgeous 3.5K OLED display has jaw-dropping colors, contrast, and brightness surrounded by impressive super-thin bezels.

  • KEYBOARD:

The Dell XPS 15 OLED (2021) keyboard is satisfying to type on.

Compared to scissor switches, this keyboards keys are more resistant but this does not affect their accuracy and responsiveness.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad on this laptop is too large and has a touch that feels luxurious.

One con to this trackpad is its massive size may result in accidental presses.

  • STORAGE:

The 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD makes this laptop fast at duplicating and launching programs.

This laptop has two SSD slots available, which means you can upgrade this for up to 8TB of storage

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The battery life is one of the major downsides of this laptop.

The Dell XPS 15 OLED (2021) was able to last 7 hours and 11 minutes, which is not good enough to let you get away with leaving the charger at home all day.

  • PORTABILITY

The Dell XPS 15 OLED (2021) can fit inside a backpack pretty easily, but it remains heavy to be carried around all day.

  • WEBCAM

The 720p webcam on this laptop is amongst the best ones you can get. It can capture photos with fine details and accurate colors.

VERDICT

If you are a home business owner and you are looking for a stylish laptop that has a glorious OLED display, powerful enough for all sorts of workloads and you don’t have a problem investing a good sum of money, then this laptop is a good one to consider.

  • KEYBOARD:

The reliable Magic Keyboard with physical keys is responsive and feels great to type on.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano does not have the fastest processor for demanding tasks like heavy gaming or video editing but it has enough performance for most tasks like opening a multitude of Chrome tabs, spreadsheets, and streaming apps.

What I liked about this laptop is that even under fairly heavy loads, no heat is felt or noise is heard.

  • DISPLAY:

The 13 inches 2K display is sharp and delivers a nice picture with thin and symmetrical bezels.

If your home business requires scanning a lot of spreadsheets or writing reports, the square shape screen offers more vertical real estate.

  • KEYBOARD:

The keyboard is comfortable to type on and feels responsive.

The only downside to this keyboard is the Fn key that is reversed with the control key but you will adjust with time.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad on this laptop can be small for some but it remains responsive and functional.

  • STORAGE:

512GB PCIe SSD offers more than enough for most home business owners and also makes the laptop startup and launch programs fast.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano can last up to 11 hours 28 minutes on a single charge, which makes you able to not carry the adapter with you for a full working day.

  • PORTABILITY

How slim, light, and small makes the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano ideal for portability for you as a business person.

  • WEBCAM

The 720p webcam is not the best possible one because their photos had good colors but lacked sharpness.

VERDICT

If you are a home business owner and you are looking for the lightest laptop to carry with you anywhere with features to keep your privacy and your data secure, and performance that gets the work done, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano is a good choice.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

With the Intel Core i7-1185G7 and the 16GB of RAM, this laptop doesn’t show any sign of slowing down, even when dozens of Chrome tabs and other programs are in use.

  • DISPLAY:

The display of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is genuinely gorgeous. Its extra vertical space is good for writing but not the case when watching movies and videos due to the two black bars you get.

  • KEYBOARD:

Despite the Surface Laptop 4 super-thin chassis, the keyboard keys have plenty of travel making writing using this keyboard completely effortless.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad on this laptop is smooth and accurate and quite nice to use with plenty of room to move.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

Looping a locally stored video, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 can last up to 11 hours and 2 minutes, but in a test that simulates real-life use, it was able to last 13 hours and 20 minutes.

  • PORTABILITY

Being thin and weighing just 2.79 pounds, this laptop is easy to carry around in your bag when you are out of your house doing business.

  • WEBCAM

The built-in 720p webcam has decent images and has nothing special to about it.

VERDICT

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

For office-centric tasks, like web browsing and word processing, and video conferencing, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 launches apps quickly without noticeable stuttering or slowdown.

  • DISPLAY:

The display of this laptop is plenty crisp. Its matte texture makes writing on it with the stylus feel like writing on a glossy panel.

Compared to the 16:9 ratio, the 16:10 one provides noticeably more vertical space.

  • KEYBOARD:

Typing on the keyboard is a joy. Flying across the keys with your finger is easy due to the correct large keys-spacing.

In the darkness, you have a 2-level backlight with sufficient brightness.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad is pretty wide but the two buttons on the top of the trackpad make it short, but it remains responsive and feels wonderful when clicked.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 is able to last an average of up to 13 hours and 14 minutes, which is more than enough for a full work-day.

  • PORTABILITY

Being on the thin side and weighing 3 lbs, this laptop is very comfortable to carry around.

  • WEBCAM

The 720p webcam offers standard image quality and has a physical privacy shutter that ensures privacy and maximizes security.

VERDICT

If you have a home business and you want the best all-around laptop that converts into a tablet and has an all-day battery life, then the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 is a good choice to consider.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST LAPTOP FOR HOME BUSINESS

BATTERY LIFE

For a home business laptop, the battery life is not that important because you have power outlets near you all the time.

If you see that you may sometimes work outdoor or travel for business, you will need a laptop that can last at least 6 hours on a single charge.

Another thing that you should pay attention to is that your home business laptop should also be able to charge up fast, for times when you lost to charge it before going out.

Any laptop that is able to charge up to 50% under 30 minutes is considered fast charging for me.

STORAGE

Storage depends largely on what you do with your laptop, if the majority of your work is done on the web browser, 128GO or 256GO is enough, especially if you know how to organize and clean up your storage disk.

If you are editing videos, you need at least 512GO to be on the safe side and not have to clean up your storage every time you want to edit a new project.

For storage type, always go with SSD instead of HDD for your main storage disk. This way, your laptop with be able to start up and launch programs faster.

PROCESSOR

As a home business owner, you should stay away from low-end CPUs like Intel Atom, Intel Pentium, Intel Celeron, and AMD E-Series because they are made for very-limited tasks like word processing.

Mid to high-end CPUs like the Intel Core i3, i5, i7, and Intel Xeon are what you should get to be able to multi-task and open a multitude of Chrome tabs without feeling a major slow down in performance.

RAM

In terms of RAM, you should get at least 8GB, especially for laptops with the recent Windows versions.

Getting 16GB or 32GB will make you not have to buy or upgrade your laptop in the following three

COOLING

The slimmer the laptop in front of you, the worse the fan will be.

In order to make sure about the fan noise and heat under your fingers while typing, you can simply test the laptop by opening a multitude of Chrome tabs playing Youtube videos at the same time and let it run for one minute or more and see if and how loud and hot it gets.

WEIGHT

Even if your business is home-based, your laptop should be lightweight enough for times when you have to travel with it.

I recommend a laptop weight of 3 lbs for easy carrying.

How long and thick the laptop is also important to make sure it can fit inside most bags. especially the want you will use.

DURABILITY

If businesses hate server downtimes, you, as a home-based business owner, your laptop should be durable enough to withstand daily use and accidents.

For the laptop hinge, I recommend it be made out of metal and magnesium or carbon alloy for the lid material.

DISPLAY

If most of the time you are in your home, I recommend you 15″ because it offers enough real estate.

If you travel a lot, you can go with a 13″ screen laptop because they are easy to travel with.

If you want to get both of worlds, you can get yourself a 14″ screen laptop, like the newly released Macbook Pro.

CONNECTIONS

Your home business laptop should have at least ports for USB, HDMI ports, and SD card reader if you need easy file transfer between devices.

Even if your work does not require using the HDMI port, I still found it useful for times when your screen gets broken and you need to access your laptop files or continue working before fixing it.

OPERATING SYSTEM

This is more of a personal choice. If you have other Apple devices and you want easy synching or if your work requires looking a certain way, I recommend you to go with Apple products that have macOS.

If you are on a budget or if you want an operating system that many IT pros are familiar with, I recommend you Windows laptops.

There is another new operating system called Chrome OS, this one is suitable for people who store most of their work online and are limited with how the number of installed programs.

TRADITIONAL OR HYBRID LAPATOPS

Hybrid, convertible, or 2-in-1s all means a laptop that doubles as a tablet. There are ones that come with a detachable keyboard and others that do not.

Since their prices are still not that affordable, I recommend hybrid laptops only for people who travel a lot or use the touchscreen daily.

INTEGRATED OR DEDICATED GPU

Integrated graphics, which means a lightweight graphics-acceleration solution that’s part of the main CPU, is enough for the home business owners who most of the time work with no-graphic tasks like web browsing and word processing.

If your home-based business is in fields like heavy architecture or video editing, then dedicated graphics chips are like GeForce GTX or RTX will be useful.
