WHY YOU SHOULD TRUST ME

My first computer was an MS-DOS laptop. I got it in about 2001 and I used to play Prince of Persia and Dave in black and white.

Because I don’t have the option, I was forced to fix and upgrade all my computers, both Windows and Mac.
In the early 2010s, I wrote about electronics and I always was helping people buy the best tech for their needs.

Apple MacBook Pro 15″ REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

Without a doubt, this laptop is very powerful.

Using intensive programs like Photoshop or Chrome will not be a problem for this laptop.

This Apple MacBook Pro 15″ makes also the best laptop for home business owners who may need to run demanding programs.

  • DISPLAY:

The screen uses in-plane switching (IPS) technology to widen viewing angles and is very bright, has vivid colors, and makes text look sharp.

  • KEYBOARD:

The Butterfly keyboard was known to be prone to failure.

Even though Apple switched the materials used with the mechanism to fix the problem. Since Apple is not too transparent about the changes and still replaces a faulty keyboard free of charge, it makes me think that it hasn’t completely fixed the issue.

The current keyboard keys are easy to press and comfortable to type on. The backlit is also useful to write in dim light conditions.

  • TRACKPAD:

The giant trackpad on this laptop is accurate, has a glass finish.

Instead of the physical depress-to-click mechanism, it uses haptic feedback to simulate clicks.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The Apple MacBook Pro 15″ is able to last up to 7 hours and 36 minutes looping a locally stored video at 50% brightness.

This is not a fantastic battery life and it is expected from a Macbook Pro due to the powerful internals.

This battery life can get you through a full working day, but you still need to carry your power adapter with you, especially if you perform intensive tasks like video rendering.

  • PORTABILITY

Being 0.61 inches thick and weighing just over 4 pounds, this laptop is very portable inside a bag or backpack.

Walking with it in hand for long periods is not something that is easy due to its weight.

  • WEBCAM

The built-in webcam is just 0.7-megapixel, which is not expected in a high-price laptop, but it remains functional enough.

VERDICT

If you are looking for a laptop with a great display, powerful audio, and long battery life for you as a finance majors student or professional, then the Apple MacBook Pro 15″ is an ideal choice to consider.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

Even this ultrabook is thin and light, it remains powerful and is better at multitasking.

For graphics, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 remains average.

No bothersome fan noise is experienced with this laptop and even it gets a little hot with use but never uncomfortable to use on the lap.

  • DISPLAY:

The 14-inch display offers a good picture with vivid colors, sharp details, and high contrast.

The 16:10 display ratio provides more room from top to bottom, which I think is beneficial for finance students or professionals.

  • KEYBOARD:

The keyboard of this laptop is snappy and a dream to type on due to the excellent key travel and roomy key spacing.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 is pretty wide but the two buttons on the top of the trackpad make it short.

Despite that, it feels great, highly responsive, and its glass makes the fingers glide smoothly.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The processor s energy efficiency architecture build played a huge role in making this laptop able to last an average of 15 hours and 7 minutes in a test that emulates real-life use.

This battery life is more than what is needed for a full day of work.

  • PORTABILITY

The laptop’s incredibly lightweight makes it easy to carry it around in a bag.

  • WEBCAM

The 720p webcam is fine for teleconferencing and has a physical privacy shutter that you can slide over the webcam.

VERDICT

If you study finance or you work in this field and you want a high-performance Ultrabook that is easy to take with you in a bag with a battery life that can last just over 15 hours, this laptop is definitely one of the best choices.

Acer Aspire 5 REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

The Acer Aspire 5 is good at day-to-day tasks feeling pretty fast with its SSD that lets the laptop starts up and launch programs faster than laptops with HDDs.

Compared to more expensive laptops, the Acer Aspire 5 doesn’t feel quite as nippy but remains good for multi-tasking.

  • DISPLAY:

The 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display has pleasing color and brightness and still looks fine off-angle.

  • KEYBOARD:

Despite the flat keys and short travel distance, typing on the Acer Aspire 5 keyboard remains comfortable even for long periods due to its nice size.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad that is slightly offset to the left is good for multi-finger gestures but it has a plastic and a cheap feel.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The Acer Aspire 5 is able to last up to 6 hours and 48 minutes in a software test that replicates medium to heavy use.

Unfortunately, this is not enough for a full work-day and it needs 3 hours to charge up fully.

  • PORTABILITY

Weighing 3.7 pounds, the Acer Aspire 5 is neither ultraportable nor overly clunky.

Considering its size and weight, I can say that this laptop has average portability.

  • WEBCAM

The webcam is well placed in the center of the top bezel.

Its image quality is blurry and too light even under good lighting conditions.

VERDICT

If you are on a budget and you are looking for the best laptop for finance for you as a student or professional, this cool and quiet laptop is a good choice to consider.

Dell XPS 17 9700 REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

Due to the Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, this Dell XPS 17 9700 offers very good performance for multitasking and even Windows 10 demanding programs.

The Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics card that this laptop has is also plenty powerful for most video editing needs and does not struggle with 4K graphics.

  • DISPLAY:

The display is surrounded with impressively thin bezels, which gives you a big screen without making the laptop too big.

  • KEYBOARD:

The keyboard keys have 1.3mm of travel, soft-touch coating and snappy feedback makes them satisfying at click and the whole keyboard a delight to type on.

  • TRACKPAD:

The glass trackpad is huge, accurate, and clicks with an easy, quiet thunk.

There are no issues with palm rejection touching the trackpad while I typed.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The Dell XPS 17 9700 was able to last 10 hours and 44 minutes in a software test that replicates performing more intensive tasks, which is really impressive for a large Ultrabook.

With this battery life, this laptop will be able to last you a whole finance work or school day without worrying if you have the power adapter with you.

  • PORTABILITY

Laptops with 17″ screens are not the ideal choice if you care a lot about portability. Add that to its heavy weight of 4.65 lbs, those factors makes this laptop rank low at portability.

  • WEBCAM

Despite the thin bezels, the Dell XPS 17 9700 still include a 720p Webcam that supports Windows Hello facial recognition and video calls quality remains grainy and washed out.

VERDICT

If you work in the finance or study it and you need a big screen and something as portable as possible, this Dell XPS 17 9700 is an excellent choice to consider.

Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook REVIEW

  • PERFORMANCE:

The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook offer surprisingly decent performance that let you open a multitude of Chrome tabs wihtout a problem.

  • DISPLAY:

The 10″ FHD IPS display is bright and vibrant.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook offers extra vertical space with its 16:10 aspect ratio.

  • KEYBOARD:

I can say that the keyboard is good but not great , due to its size and the shape and spacing between keys.

It will be very difficult to use for people accustomed to full-sized keyboards.

  • TRACKPAD:

The trackpad is not that large, but it feels fine and scrolls competently and gets the job done at the end of the day.

  • BATTERY LIFE:

The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook is able to last 21 hours and 29 minutes looping a localy stored video, which is way above Chrombooks average battery life.

  • PORTABILITY

Portability is where this hybrid laptop shines. Its weight of just 2.03 lbs (including the keyboard and cover) makes it easy to carry with you in any circumstance.

  • WEBCAM

The 2MP front camera and 8MP rear camera are better than ones found on laptops.

The video calls are clear with the front camera and the rear one is just fine for taking picture of your notes or simple things like that.

VERDICT

If you are on a strict budget and seeking a very portable laptop that is able to perform basic finance tasks, then this Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook is an ideal choice.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST LAPTOP FOR FINANCE

CPU

For basic finance tasks, an U-series Intel Core i5 processor is enough to run programs smoothly and you can get an i3 CPU only if you are on a budget.

If your finance work relies on AI forecasting, I recommend you i7 processors or at least the Ryzen 5 variant AMD.

BATTERY LIFE

The best finance laptop should last at least 7 hours because some serious finance situations like investing can make you have to use it away from power outlets.

Another thing that you pay attention too is how fast the battery charge up. Anything that can get up to 50% under 30 minutes is fast charging for me.

DISPLAY

Other than the screen real estate, the laptop display size plays a role in how portable is the laptop.

13″ displays makes the laptop easy to carry and travel with, while the 17″ displays offer more than enough screen real estate to open multiple finance programs next to each other.

The best display size for me is the 15″, it offer advantages of both worlds. It offer enough screen space and remains easy to travel with.

RAM

If you can afford it, get a 16GB RAM, this way have enough memory for even demanding programs and you will not have to upgrade it in the near future.

If its not the case, you can go with 8GB and still be able to open massive volumes of data and information whilst initiating several other tasks simultaneously.

STORAGE

Storage space depends largely on what you will install as programs and store as files.

If your finance work requires to store videos or install lots of programs, then 256 GB of storage is the minimum that you can go with.

Other than the storage space, always opt for laptops with an SSD.

Compared to HDDs, SSDs makes the laptop able to starts up and launch programs faster.

GRAPHICS

Integrated graphics chip are capable of meeting your day-to-day graphics needs without difficulty.

KEYBOARD

How comfortable the keyboard should be depends largely on your personal use. If your fiance work or studies require to type a lot, you should opt for a sturdy keyboard that will not fail in its first year of use.

Avoid Macbook with Butterfly keyboards because they are prone to failure.

TRACKPAD

You finance laptop trackpad should be large enough, with glass finish or at least plastic finish that does not make your fingers stick when they are slightly sweaty.

CONNECTIVITY

Your finance laptop should have at least a headphone/microphone combo jack, a USB Gen 3.2 Type C port, an HDMI port, and a USB Type A port.

If you want easy file transfer between different electronic devices, an SD card reader slot is useful.

OPERATING SYSTEM

Windows laptops are what you should look at if you are on a budget. They offer a wider specs to choose from and are easier to repair by most IT pros.

Macbooks are good for you as a finance student or professional if you have to look a certain way in order get deals, or if you already have Apple products and you want easy synch between them.

Chrome OS is new operating system that is good for finance people who store their files online and them majority of what they need is accessbile from the web browser.

WEIGHT

Weight is an important factor when you are looking for the best laptop for finance.

Lightweight laptops can be easily carried to different places for official purposes without any hassle.

TRADITIONAL OR HYBRID LAPTOP

Hybrid, convertible, or 2-in-1 are all words that mean a laptop that is able to doubles as a tablet.

Considerign their higher prices, I only recommend hybrid laptop for finance people who will really use the stylus and touchpad everyday.
